Our position on multi-sport facility

We’re taking a wait and see approach. Broadly, the community could use soccer fields. In a vacuum, this could be a positive development.

BUT
- As taxpayers, we wouldn’t support a tax increase. And we think potential economic benefits need to be scrutinized to make sure they're plausible. Further, we believe fields should be primarily for use by the community - if tournaments, tourism and profits take precedence over community access, we all lose.

- As a public facility, we insist everyone should have access. It shouldn’t be monopolized by one club - or one sport, for that matter. It must be equally available to all community members and organizations. It's worth noting that Community Fields, though government owned, is not.

- We're concerned that the firm presenting the current proposal, SFA, has repeatedly stated that the impetus for the project is the looming closure of Community Fields. This makes it appear to be a government bailout of one specific private organization.

Organizations like the Pony League, Illini Elite Volleyball and Millennium Futbol Club aren’t reliant on the government for basic needs. And we’re in the process of making capital improvements that will include a number of lighted fields by the end of the fall. We believe this type of approach is more appropriate for a private club.

If the proposed facility becomes something all community groups can use equally, without becoming a burden to taxpayers, we're open to it. But if it's a desperate grab for nebulous tourism dollars - or worse yet, a taxpayer-funded bailout of one specific organization, then it's something we'll have difficulty supporting.
